This afternoon, I gave a talk about the history of women in the rabbinate at Brighton and Hove Progressive Synagogue as part of the congregation’s 90th anniversary calendar of celebrations.

Today is Yom Ha-Sho’ah, the day set aside in the Today is Yom Ha-Sho’ah, the day set aside in the Jewish calendar for remembrance of the 6 million Jews murdered - and the tens of thousands of Jewish communities destroyed - in the Holocaust. One third of the World Jewish population was annihilated between 1939 and 1945. Half the Jews of Europe. The World Jewish population in 1939 was 18 million. Today, it stands at 15.5 million. #NeverAgain! A Jewish slogan that must be extended beyond the extermination of the 6,000,000 to all minority peoples. As the daughter of a Viennese refugee, whose own father was incarcerated in Dachau, and whose wider family were murdered, the major lessons of the Sho’ah are expressed in the passages of the Torah that exhort us not to oppress the stranger/sojourner, but rather to love the stranger/sojourner as we love ourselves (Exodus 23, Leviticus 19).
