I would like to say a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone, who made the celebration of the 25th anniversary of my ordination such a wonderful occasion last Shabbat (12.07.14). Everything, from the beautiful flowers set on either side of the reading desk, to the delicious Kiddush, transformed a milestone in my life and rabbinate into a very special simchah.

It was so lovely to share the service with my dear colleague and former Leo Baeck College study partner, Rabbi Danny Rich and celebrate our 25th anniversaries together. It was so heart-warming to see so many people, sharing our special moment with us – and to be honoured to hear magnificent tributes delivered by the two people who know us best, Laura Lassman and Jess Wood Sarah.

I was very moved by the very kind words of outgoing chair, Peter Speck, who has been such a great support to me over the past four years of his chairmanship, and also, by the book containing so many lovely messages and by the exquisite silver dish and loving inscription. I shall always treasure these precious gifts. Thank you. I was also very touched by what people said to me privately and by the cards and gifts I have received.

We use the word ‘milestone’ with reference to the anniversaries we mark and celebrate because we know that life is a journey. I have spent the last 14 years of my journey as a rabbi with you and been honoured to participate in the journey of our unique congregation and in the journeys of so many wonderful people, who are part of this special community of fellow-travellers. I look forward to the journeys ahead of us and send all my warmest wishes and deepest thanks to you all.

Rabbi Elli

P.S. For those who are interested, the tributes made by Jess and Peter, the Jewish Chronicle article, in which I reflect on the past 25 years(11.07.14), and the address I gave at my ordination on 7th July 1989, are all available on my website: and Facebook page: – and from the synagogue office.
