Yom Kippur/Yoma

Yom Kippur/Yoma

Yom Kippur
Yoma[1]

The Day
the exceptional day
out of our lives
out of Life
stripped bare of
Life’s essentials
etched in bone-white
lodged
in the realm
of Eternity
suspended
between
past
and future.

Yom Kippur
Yoma
The Day
with a single goal
after long hours
spent in confession
remorse

exhausted
our misdeeds
forgiven
but
not disappeared
not conjured away:
kippur
‘covered’
so we can begin
again.

Rabbi Elli Tikvah Sarah

  1. Yoma is Aramaic for ‘The Day’. The name given to Yom Kippur by the Talmudic sages.
